2016 SAC Songwriting Challenge Week 1

Woot woot! Week 1 is in the books. This challenge has already pretty much 10x’ed my songwriting productivity this year haha.

Some notes:

-I used D and G for my two chords.

-I couldn’t figure out a bridge, so I just left it as is since it’s already Saturday. I hadn’t realized how much I relied on different chords to create that sense of change in the bridge. I’m still struggling to figure out how to make the best use of changes in the melody (instead of chord progression) to create that shift.

-I ended up starting from the verse melody, which made the chorus hook a little harder to figure out I think.  Luckily I came up with the line “love isn’t labour” pretty early on though, and that allowed me to shape the rest of the song around that.

Watcha think?

“Love isn’t Labour” v1

lyrics

Last night I got way too drunk
Chased the high of the bottle ’til I couldn’t run
So I laid my soul
On the grassy knoll
That’s when I realized
So I called you up to tell you that you’re not the one
That messed up
There’s all this shit Im running from
What have I done
Oh you, you try to prop me up like a crater
But love isn’t labor
Oh you, you shouldn’t prop me up like a crater
But love isn’t labor
And You’re not paper
I stumbled in
But this time it wasnt routine
I’m face to face with
My own vulnerabilities
Oh now I see
I’ve done you wrong
So many times we couldn’t count
But youre still here
You haven’t quit on my unsettled heart
you’re in the dark
Oh you, you try to prop me up like a crater
But love isn’t labor
Oh you, you shouldn’t prop me up like a crater
But love isn’t labor
And You’re not paper
